Hi Louis, thanks for providing your perspective. I can appreciate that Friendfeed hasn't fulfilled it's potential for some folks, though I find myself using it more and more everyday.

To the hispters comment.. I have definitely heard hipsters make the exact same argument about bands once they get big and I continue to stand behind it being an accurate comparison. I'm certainly not suggesting that early adopters aren't necessary, but there is a danger with relying on them for long term growth.

I think labeling early adopters as hipsters is not accurate. Early adopters, myself included, really believe in products well before others do. Sometimes we are right, and sometimes we are wrong - be it due to market changes or the product potentially not developing as expected. I believe in what Friendfeed was supposed to have been. I like what it turned out to be. But there is a big gap between what I thought was its full potential and where we are now. It is disappointing, yet you won't see me ditching the service. It is still very powerful, even as there is lower engagement.

If the folks who made my cable box spent even 1 second debating the 'halting problem' and not writing better code that doesn't leak memory, I can see why it needed to be restarted :)

But seriously, that is an interesting issue. As we move forward in time, it's more and more likely that programs will never halt as they are integrated into our daily lives and routines. Though I would have a hard time proving that mathematically. Regardless, we are becoming more and more dependent on the software that powers our lives.

Humans may rest, sleep or relax, but that only halt when they die. Luckily for software, it can be restarted.

Agreed but Look up the "Halting Problem" and what level of certainty is achievable ahead of time that a program won't get into the state your poor cable box got into

simple and excellent post - we should distribute this for all the FED to see. I can do that if the author gives me the rights to do so.
Stepping through code as you describe is the true peeling of the onion that gives you the extra insight that is rarely found in a reference about the language or library in this case.

I agree with the how you have explained it. I believe we probably think alike here. BTW - how are you handling all the comments on this blog?
Sorry couldn't help it!

It's definitely true that when it comes to civil engineering, the construction is a critical component. But in those cases, there isn't a worry that another company is going to come along and "eat your lunch".

If the product never ships, there will be no site to enjoy... or ever come back too.

I'm definitely not suggesting that if you know how to write it correctly, you should be lazy. But if you can bootstrap and achieve solid results, whether or not the code is perfect is secondary.. it's personal.

Very interesting argument and one I have to think through to decide whether I agree or not. It is true that the experience is the thing in the end. Let's face it, who is looking at the code (even if you can) when you are experiencing a web product. If the experience is good, then that is what brings you back. Nevertheless, you can say analogous things about those bridges that collapse due to heavy traffic or some weather event. If you are not keen on your craft whatever it is , there may be nothing to come back to when it collapses or fails to evolve because the code was unmaintainable or not extensible.

Having the absolute grasp of anything doesn't translate directly into something tangible other then maybe a piece of paper called a college degree.
Nevertheless it can in the right hands be what produces something valuable. Not sure what not caring or not having a grasp can produce.
